Where colour has been used in these prints the artist has cut multiple blocks, one for each colour, the key block is engraved first – usually a black or dark colour – and this will be printed last. The superimposing of each film of colour one upon another also enables an additional colour to be achieved [ e.g. green from blue over yellow ], this is because of an element of transparency in the inks. Careful registration of the separate colours is of course important at the printing stage.
